The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has named INXS among its 2026 nominees, putting the Australian band in the running more than two decades after becoming eligible. The nomination places the group alongside a wide field of artists and marks a major moment for one of Australia’s most successful music exports.
In comments shared after the announcement, bassist Garry Gary Beers said he felt proud to see the band recognized, especially as a group that started on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. His reaction added a personal note to a nomination that has stirred fresh attention around INXS and its legacy.
Formed in 1977, INXS grew from local pub stages into a global act with a string of major hits, including Need You Tonight, Never Tear Us Apart, New Sensation and Devil Inside. The band sold tens of millions of records and became one of the defining rock groups of the 1980s.
The 2026 nomination now opens the next stage of the process, with final inductees expected to be announced later this year.
